These testimonials come from Daniel Heyman’s 2011 series Portraits of Veteran Survivors of Military Sexual Assault. Reminiscent of Maira Kalman’s blend of hand lettered text and fauvist patches of vibrant, unmixed paint, Heyman creates chromatically cheerful portraits, but his sitters’ testimonies tell disturbing tales of sexual violence. This discord creates a haunting, dramatic irony between how the subject looks and what she has experienced.

Painter and printmaker Daniel Heyman was a Guggenheim Fellow in 2010. He teaches art at Rhode Island School of Design, Princeton University and Swarthmore College. Heyman holds an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, and he lives and works in Philadelphia.
