Shadows of Spirit: The Visual Culture of Gullah and Beyond

Embracing the visual and decorative arts, including distinctive basketweaving, quilting, ironwork and ceramics, as well as storytelling, dance and music, Gullah culture remains unique within African America. Combined with a selection of rich oral histories of 21st century St. Helena Island residents collected by Rutkoff, Scott, and their team of Kenyon College students and Cleveland teachers, this exhibition traces African sources, colonial and modern influences and innovations in Gullah material culture.
