Visual and performance artist Pushpamala N is currently based in Bangalore, India, where she was born and raised. After receiving a BA in Economics, English, and Psychology from Bangalore University, Pushpamala attended the Faculty of the Fine Arts, MS University in Baroda, where she received her BFA and MFA in Sculpture. Pushpamala’s work, of which she is often the subject, utilizes photography as a tool for understanding and ultimately subverting the stereotypes attached to a specific culture.

Internationally respected as a photo- and video-performance artist, Pushpamala has won a number of awards including the National Award (1984), the gold medal at the Sixth Annual Delhi Triennale (1986), the Charles Wallace Trust Fellowship for residency at St. Martin’s School of Art in London (1992-93), the Senior Fellowship from the Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development (1995-1997), and The Rockefeller Foundation artist residency at the Bellagio Study Center in Italy (2006).
