Poetry and “Aftermath”

[+]

What an extraordinary delight it was to be among those who attended Professor Royal Rhodes’s gallery talk held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017.

Professor Rhodes had selected a number of photographs from the current exhibition, Aftermath: The Fallout of War, upon which to focus, and shared poems he had paired with selected photograph, which for me, unlocked an even more profound understanding of each of the works.

I had asked Professor Rhodes after his talk whether he would share the poems that he had read. The list of poems and their authors is as follows:

  • Najat Abdul Samad, “I am a Syrian woman…”
  • Youssef Abu Yihea, “I am Syrian” (trans. by Ghada Al-Atrash)
  • N.A. Samad, “Do Not Die” and “If”
  • R.Rhodes, “The Corpse Washer”
